Learning vocabulary with Anki
Recurring sessions for students of Egyptian, held four times to date: spaced repetition in practice, how to work with the department’s card decks, and how to adapt them.
Digital Methods
My session in the foundational lecture series of Archaeology and Cultural History of Northeast Africa (AKNOA). Slides in German; access on request.
Materials
I created and maintain the Anki decks for the sign and vocabulary lessons of Daniel Werning’s Einführung in die hieroglyphisch-ägyptische Schrift und Sprache, hosted by the Institute of Archaeology at HU Berlin.
Beyond that I generate decks from corpus data, with the cards ordered by how often a lemma is attested, so that learning follows what one is actually likely to meet in a text. Three cover an entire corpus: a lemma deck for the whole of the Thesaurus Linguae Aegyptiae, a Coptic deck built on Coptic SCRIPTORIUM, and a hieratic palaeography built on AKU-PAL, the Mainz academy’s online palaeography of hieratic and cursive hieroglyphs. Smaller decks can be cut to a single text or a reading course.
Some examples of what I have built: hieratic sign forms with their dating and their attestations; practice sentences that ask for transliteration, glossing and translation in turn; the TLA lemma deck, where each word carries its attested spellings, its homographs and the periods it is attested in; Coptic vocabulary with etymologies and dictionary references; Meroitic.
If any of this would be useful for your own learning or teaching, write to me: I am glad to pass decks on, to help you build your own, and to share what has proved to work.
